Gaza City Under Siege: Israeli Strike on Nasser Hospital Claims Journalists’ Lives

Gaza City, August 25, 2025 — A devastating Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza has resulted in at least 20 deaths, including five journalists and rescue personnel, according to Gaza’s health authorities . The strikes struck with chilling precision: the first hit the hospital’s upper floor; the second struck moments later as journalists and medics rushed in to assist .

Among the journalists killed were:

Hussam al-Masri (Reuters)

Mariam Abu Dagga (Associated Press)

Mohammed Salama (Al Jazeera)

Moaz Abu Taha

Ahmed Abu Aziz

Reuters photographer Hatem Khaled was injured in the second strike . The Foreign Press Association condemned the attack, calling it among the deadliest Israeli strikes on international media workers since the conflict began . In response, the Israeli military announced a preliminary inquiry, stressing it “does not intentionally target journalists” and “regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians” .

Israel has mobilized tens of thousands of reservists to intensify operations in Gaza City, aiming to dismantle Hamas strongholds amidst ongoing hostilities that began after Hamas’s October 2023 assault. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet has approved expanded military measures despite increasing international pressure to pursue a ceasefire—notably driven by coalition hardliners advocating annexation of territories .

Hamas has accused Netanyahu of impeding peace efforts, describing the campaign as a “brutal war against innocent civilians in Gaza City.” In response, the Israeli government insists its actions target militant infrastructure, not civilians .

This wave of strikes places Gaza’s already strained medical infrastructure at further risk, particularly as Nasser Hospital is one of the last functioning public hospitals in southern Gaza .
As of late July, official figures report over 61,805 Palestinians killed in the war—many of them civilians—and 217 journalists and media workers among the dead . Since October 7, 2023, over 240 Palestinian journalists have reportedly been killed by Israeli fire, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate .

In August alone, multiple strikes have led to heavy casualties. For example, on one recent night, at least 55 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes—including several journalists and aid seekers—with about 34 killed in a single day, excluding those in earlier tent strikes .
Nasser Hospital Victims ~20 (including 5 journalists)
Journalists Killed (total since Oct 2023) Over 240–242
Total Palestinian Deaths (by late July) ~61,800+
Aid Seekers Killed (Aug) At least 55 in one strike night (plus others)

The double-tap strike on Nasser Hospital stands as one of the most harrowing episodes in Gaza’s nearly two-year war. The targeting of medical staff and journalists compounds global outrage over civilian cost of the campaign, and the mounting displacement and famine now gripping the Strip further escalate humanitarian concerns.
