JAMMU: In a sweeping enforcement action, officials from the Legal Metrology Department and the Food Safety Department have seized over 2,700 kilograms of expired frozen fish and chicken from several meat shops in Jammu, exposing alarming breaches of food safety norms.
Deputy Controller Manoj Prabhakar confirmed that the raids focused on violations related to expiry-date compliance, improper storage conditions, and faulty labelling. Three shopkeepers have been booked for flouting packaging and storage regulations. The confiscated meat was destroyed at Kotbhalwal under the supervision of the Jammu Municipal Corporation to prevent it from re-entering the market.
The operation comes close on the heels of a similar crackdown in Kashmir, where over 3,500 kilograms of rotten and adulterated meat were recently seized and destroyed, igniting public outrage and raising urgent questions over the state’s food safety enforcement.
With back-to-back large-scale seizures, officials have warned that the drive against unsafe food will continue, and violators will face strict legal action to safeguard public health.
